1. Please state in measurable and quantifiable terms the specific community need that the
Philly Fellow will address, including the number of people in the community directly
affected by the problem.
The Philly Fellow will address the complex needs of domestic violence victims in
Philadelphia and seek to raise community awareness about this issue. Domestic violence
is a social ill that has numerous implications for our City. The issue is a daily reality for
thousands of Philadelphians each year:
o 13, 039 filed for protection from abuse orders (2006).
o 8,011 hotline calls were answered by the Philadelphia Domestic Violence Hotline
(fiscal year 2007).
o 71,350 domestic abuse incidents were responded to by the Philadelphia Police
Department (2006)
Frequently, victims of domestic violence face multiple challenges, including: victimization,
homelessness, poverty, illiteracy, under or unemployment, substance abuse, and
depression. Ninety-nine percent of Women Against Abuse’s (WAA) clients are at or below
the federal poverty guidelines. Since one of the primary reasons a woman will return to
her abuser is the lack of money and a steady income, WAA’s goal is to provide the victim
with the tools and skills she needs to provide for herself and for her family. Last year,
WAA served 11,409 individuals through emergency housing, legal services, hotline
counseling, education and advocacy programs.
2. Describe how your agency addresses this need, and how the new capacity created by
this fellow will help alleviate the problem.
WAA provides free services to victims of domestic violence and their children, including
emergency shelter, legal services, transitional housing and 24 hour hotline as part of the
Philadelphia Domestic Violence Hotline. WAA believes that addressing the issues of
domestic violence demands a community approach. Thus, WAA seeks to build community
awareness and advocacy efforts on a local and state level. The new capacity created by
the Philly Fellow position enables WAA to more fully develop community awareness as
well as build advocacy efforts both locally and statewide.
3. Describe the level of community involvement in the fellow’s project.
WAA receives a plethora of requests to attend community events, distribute information or
speak to local neighborhood and business groups. The level of direct community
involvement in the fellow’s project is flexible, depending on the fellow’s skills. A majority of
the fellow’s time will be spent increasing the flow of communication between WAA and the
community. This may be accomplished through e-newsletters, press conferences and
other media opportunities.
Section IV: Job Description

Coordinates distribution of community outreach and media materials, including
electronic newsletters and eblasts.
Assists agency staff in responding to media requests.

position.
Bachelor’s Degree in marketing or public relations or a related field is preferred.
Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and to follow through on
assigned projects is required.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member is required.
Demonstrated commitment to service of others is required.
Demonstrated proficiency in communication, both verbal and written, is required.

3. Please outline your agency’s plan to orient and train the fellow.
Extensive training on domestic violence.
Site visits to the emergency shelter, transitional housing, and one morning in a
Philadelphia Court Room observing a domestic violence case.
One on one training on public relations issues from the Director of Fund Development
and Communications.
Section V: Supervision/Resources
1. Please briefly describe plans for supervision of fellow.
The fellow and his/her supervisor will meet once per week for formal discussion and
instruction regarding new assignments and work flow. Less formal supervision is
available as needed.
2. What methods, information, or data will you use to evaluate the fellow’s success in their
position?
Two key indicators of success are the ability to meet deadlines and delivery of a quality
product. Although WAA is a small non-profit, there are constantly changing demands for
the development and communications department. In addition, the ability to be flexible and
contribute to the team environment is crucial. Success will be monitored through the
weekly supervision meetings as well as through a formal evaluation process at the end of
the fellow’s fourth month.
Section VI: Project Plan
Please outline goals and results you expect the fellow to achieve and the measures you
will use to evaluate performance. These goals must address the community need stated
above.
1. Please describe the proposed project goal you expect the fellow to achieve.
This position would help the development team at WAA realize part of the agency’s
strategic goals to increase and diversify funding resources. The ability to be proactive
with media relations and maintain consistent contact with supporters electronically
represents two of the operational goals that the Public Relations fellow will be
instrumental in maintaining and developing. Potential projects will include: writing press
releases and media advisories, creating reports, developing the agency newsletters,
updating content on the agency website, writing and sending eblasts, creating an e-
newsletter and contacting the media to publicize events. These activities will assist the
Director of Fund Development and Communications in increasing donor and public
knowledge about the organization and raising awareness about domestic violence.
2. Please list significant milestones for this project and dates by which they will be
accomplished:
Publicize Domestic Violence Awareness month activities (October 1-30, 2008),
including listings in major print publications, community events calendars, etc.
Coordinate annual community outreach art event community outreach (October or
November, 2008)
Write and send quarterly e-newsletters (September, 2008, December, 2008, March,
2009, June 2009)
Send annual mailing with Philadelphia Domestic Violence Hotline cards to police
districts and targeted doctors’ offices.
Publish print newsletter (November, 2008, May, 2009)
Publicize Teen Dating Violence Awareness week (February, 2009)
Review and update media list (ongoing)
Review website for updates (ongoing)
Create press kits as necessary (ongoing)
