Section III:  Community Need
Please submit a one paragraph response for each question.

1. Please state in measurable and quantifiable terms the specific community need that the Philly Fellow will address, including the number of people in the community directly affected by the problem.

The Painted Bride Art Center’ programs establish the center as a unique cultural asset in communities across the Greater Philadelphia area. The Bride plays a vital role in the community, one of a matchmaker between groundbreaking, contemporary artists and unique audiences. The Bride presents an average of sixty to eighty events a year in its core program series.  The annual audience of the Bride directly affected by this work is 20,000 and the work has a larger impact beyond these constituents. Additionally, the Bride is committed to enhancing art education and outreach to the community. Our art education programs provide unique opportunities for communities and artists to develop relationships and engage in dialogue around important social issues. The majority of our art education work provides an opportunity for students to explore issues that are
currently affecting their lives in a safe environment, including violence, racism, poverty, body image and sexual identity.

The Philly Fellow will fill the important role of Development Associate for the Painted Bride Art Center.  The work of the fellow will directly affect the ability of the Bride to present and create these important programs that use the arts to address social issues by creating a dialogue and a safe forum to bring these issues to the forefront.  


2. Describe how your agency addresses this need, and how the new capacity created by this fellow will help alleviate the problem.

The Painted Bride Art Center has been a cultural pioneer since it first opened its doors, earning a reputation as a veritable incubator for artists breaking new ground in their fields.   As the Bride has evolved, it has purposefully provided access to a range of artistic voices about political and social issues.  Our commitment to varying points of view has provided a forum for voices of underrepresented communities, such as those of ethnic, cultural, gender, and sexual diversity. From the beginning, the Bride has cultivated an openness that invites artists and community members to become a part of it. The Bride began as an artist collective and has maintained an approach that is inclusive and welcomes the ideas of many people.

For nearly 40 years the Bride has been providing innovative and engaging educational programs to children, youth, adults and community groups.  In keeping with our mission to effect social change, our educational programs strive to meet the following objectives: Enhance and augment art activities in Philadelphia schools; Provide unique and insightful opportunities for students and members of Philadelphia communities to interact with artists; Develop intimate relationships between artists, students and community members; Provide programs to underserved schools and communities that have few or no opportunities for cultural education and activity; and provide programs that support human development through constructive, interactive and hands-on activities that engage residents with their communities.  The Bride continues to build an eclectic network that includes artists, neighborhood cultural groups, social service organizations, public schools and universities.

The role of the fellow will be to raise money to support the Bride’s programs.

3. Describe the level of community involvement in the fellow’s project.

The fellow will be working within an extremely important, established, well-known art non- profit in Philadelphia.  In its 40 years, the Bride has become an innovative, internationally recognized, and artist-centered institution whose important mission is realized through all of our activities, from performances and exhibitions to education and outreach.  Today, The Painted Bride Art Center is the Philadelphia region’s premier multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural presenting arts organization.  

The Bride’s work is highly dependent on its relationships with the community.  We are of a size that we can be responsive to the needs of the diverse communities that make up the city of Philadelphia.


Section IV:  Job Description

1. Please outline in list form the fellow’s duties and responsibilities.

1.  Help to develop and execute an annual departmental plan with a range of goals and objectives designed to increase gift income, the participation and effectiveness of Board Fund Raising Committee members, and the effectiveness of the department’s systems, both electronic and paper (such as data entry and retrieval, research capabilities, and donor tracking and acknowledgement).

2.  Identify, research and “qualify” potential major gift donors from the Bride’s lists and records of current or former donors, capital campaign donors, or from independent research.  Prioritize those individuals, corporations, or foundations most likely to consider a significant investment in the Bride’s capital, program, artistic, or operating needs and, in collaboration with the Board of Directors and Executive Director, implement both short and long-term strategies to secure their generous participation.  

3.  Coordinate the effective participation of all Board members, the Executive Director, and other appropriate administrative and artistic staff in donor cultivation and/or solicitation activities.  

4.  Continually evaluate and upgrade the Bride’s annual fund campaign.

5.  Research the practicality and timing of new fundraising initiatives (e.g., special events, basic planned giving), secure necessary approvals from the Executive Director and Fund Raising Committee, and implement as decided.  

6.  Coordinate the timely writing and production of development-related newsletters, press releases, and fund raising and marketing materials.

7.  Increase awareness and positive perceptions of the Bride in Philadelphia and its philanthropic community.  Represent the Executive Director and/or the Painted Bride at appropriate community functions and events.

8.  Serve as a staff member to/of the Board’s Development Committee


2. Please outline in list form the skills/qualifications a fellow should have to succeed in this position.

The Philly Fellow must have superior communications and presentation skills that are effective with a range of constituencies (e.g., volunteers, fellow staff, executives of major corporations, Board members).  It is essential that the Fellow have the ability to collect pertinent data, draw conclusions, and make credible recommendations.  

Proactive work style, self-confidence, high energy, strong organizational skills, an attention to detail, a sense of humor, and the ability to manage quick changes are desired.

A working knowledge of basic research databases and proficiency in typing are also necessary.

An understanding of the Philadelphia fundraising environment is a major plus.  

3. Please outline your agency’s plan to orient and train the fellow.

The fellow will work closely with the Executive Director.  A new strategic plan was developed in the past year that includes development goals and ways to achieve those goals.  These will be the guidelines in which the Fellow works.  The fellow will also work with the Board Development Committee to assist in the implementation of our strategies.   In addition, the Bride is committed to professional development of all staff and continues to identify learning opportunities to assist us in honing our skills.


Section V:  Supervision/Resources

1. Please briefly describe plans for supervision of fellow.

The Executive Director will meet with the fellow on a weekly basis outlining a weekly work plan that includes clearly defined goals.  The weekly meetings will also be an opportunity to discuss additional issues or needs that have come up over the past week.  

The fellow will attend and be expected to participate in weekly staff meetings where we discuss issues across departments, monthly program meetings where we discuss and evaluate our programs, and bi-monthly board meetings.


2. What methods, information, or data will you use to evaluate the fellow’s success in their position?

The Executive Director will be responsible for evaluating the fellow.  The fellow will also be asked to complete a self evaluation.  Examples of what will be measured include: new resources researched and identified, new relationships created, grants submitted, ability to communicate with multiple constituents, and ability to work within a team and independently. We have developed an evaluation reporting system and staff is evaluated after three months and then again after a year.

Section VI: Project Plan

Please outline goals and results you expect the fellow to achieve and the measures you will use to evaluate performance. These goals must address the community need stated above.

1. Please describe the proposed project goal you expect the fellow to achieve.

The primary objective of this position is to develop and manage an ambitious,
comprehensive, and targeted fund raising program capable of identifying and successfully securing financial support from individuals, foundations, and corporations for the Painted Bride‘s identified capital, programmatic/artistic, and operating priorities.  

2. Please list significant milestones for this project and dates by which they will be accomplished:

July – Develop templated proposals for general operating, education, outreach, and capital proposals.

August – Submit grants and sponsorships to corporate and foundation sources
maintaining a list of pending grants from $350,000 to $500,000 a year.

September – Work with the Board and Executive Director to implement individual giving plan.

October – Annual Appeal

November – Maintain databases and communication to stakeholders.

March – Annual Appeal

May – Annual Fundraiser

June – Painted Bride Art Center year end or annual report written, created and distributed to funders and stakeholders.
