Agency Mission: MANNA delivers care and hope by nourishing people who are at acute
nutritional risk due to a life-threatening illness.  A small professional staff and 1,000
dedicated volunteers bring over 40,000 nutritious, freshly prepared, home-delivered meals each month to individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS, cancer or other life-threatening illness. MANNA dietitians promote wellness through nutrition education and counseling. Through these services, MANNA provides opportunities for caring people to extend loving support to families, friends, and neighbors.

Section III:  Community Need
Please submit a one paragraph response for each question.

1.        Please state in measurable and quantifiable terms the specific community need that the Philly Fellow will address, including the number of people in the community directly affected by the problem MANNA currently prepares and serves approximately 2,000 meals per day, meeting the nutritional needs of over 850 individual clients at a given time. MANNA recently expanded its mission to serve anyone at acute nutritional risk from a life-threatening illness and is currently engaged in a capacity building/capital campaign to increase its service capacity from 900 clients at a time to over 1,500 clients at a time. The Fellow will play a critical role in helping MANNA secure funds for the capacity building program as well as funds to maintain its current program levels.

2.        Describe how your agency addresses this need, and how the new capacity created by this fellow will help alleviate the problem.

MANNA is in the process of raising $3 million to renovate and expand its current facility at
12 South 23rd Street as well as to purchase equipment and fund increased program
costs.  The public campaign will be launched in the winter of 2007.  As part of the
development team, the fellow would provide administrative support to the campaign
committee including helping to plan and coordinate special cultivation events and
assisting in the campaign wrap-up process. The funds raised through this campaign will
enable MANNA to increase its service capacity by over 60%.  In addition, MANNA raises a significant percentage of its funds through special events including four signature events
over the course of a year.  In addition to raising funds for MANNA, these events also
generate publicity and raise awareness of MANNA and its services.

3.        Describe the level of community involvement in the fellow’s project.
The Fellow would work with the development team to help manage event logistics, develop marketing and promotion materials, and coordinate volunteers and committee meetings. The Fellow would be working with a large community of business sponsors, media outlets and hundreds of individual volunteers that participate in our events.  The events are high profile and help not only to raise funds but to increase awareness of MANNA’s mission in the community.  One area of focus for the Fellow will be refining and continuing to develop the MANNAfests young friends program. In addition, the Fellow would work with the capital campaign committee to develop opportunities to raise awareness of the campaign, its goals, and the increased services MANNA is able to provide as a result.


Section IV:  Job Description

1. Please outline in list form the fellow’s duties and responsibilities.
•        Event Management (working with development team members) – create timelines,
procedures, assignments and schedules.  Track income and expenditures in relation to
budget. Assist in appropriate corrective action as needed, including aggressively
promoting sales and soliciting in-kind donations to meet financial goals.
•        Event Logistics – develop overall flow of event. Research and procure resources,
services and equipment needed.  Serve as on-site supervisor during events as necessary.  

•        Marketing – Identify target audiences including research on capital campaign
prospects, develop and manage advertising/promotion campaigns, represent MANNA at
public events.
•        Committees – schedule and conduct event committee meetings; prepare and
distribute minutes.
•        Volunteer Coordination – identify volunteer needs. Work with Volunteer Coordinator to monitor recruitment, scheduling, and confirmation of volunteer assignments related to the events.  Conduct orientation and training as needed.
•        Data Management – process RSVPs and maintain current reports reflecting ticket
sales and donations.
•        Mailings – oversee mailing of invitations, letters, flyers, ticket fulfillment, etc.
•        Customer Service - handle phone inquiries regarding event details and ticket
requests.
•        Miscellaneous activities as needed during the course of capital campaign process
and event planning.

2. Please outline in list form the skills/qualifications a fellow should have to succeed in this
position. This position requires someone who has:
•        Ability to collect and organize information
•        Exceptional attention to detail
•        Strong interpersonal skills, by phone and in-person
•        Confidence, poise and maturity necessary to communicate with staff, donors,
volunteers and stakeholders at all levels
•        Excellent writing skills.  Marketing background helpful
•        Ability to work independently; discipline to stay on task and on schedule, as well as to keep others on task
•        Persistence to follow up and follow through while meeting deadlines
•        Good sense of humor, flexibility, commitment to MANNA mission

3.        Please outline your agency’s plan to orient and train the fellow.
The Fellow will be given a general orientation to MANNA to assure a solid understanding of the organization and its mission.  Opportunities to work in departments including the
kitchen and distribution will help the Fellow gain an appreciation for the services MANNA
provides and the community need.  For each project, the fellow will be assigned a
Development Manager who will serve as a mentor. The manager will review the plans and
results from the previous year, discuss new opportunities and help to create a project plan
for the event.  

Section V:  Supervision/Resources

1. Please briefly describe plans for supervision of fellow.

The Fellow will be supervised by the Director of Development on tasks relating to the
capital campaign and the Director of Events and Communications for special events.  In
addition, the Fellow will participate in weekly team meetings that serve as opportunities to
brainstorm and to receive insight and feedback from other team members.

2. What methods, information, or data will you use to evaluate the fellow’s success in their
position?

Performance will be evaluated on the ability to work with the group, to meet deadlines and
financial goals, and to contribute creatively to the problem solving and development
process. Skills will be evaluated based on the direct experience of the supervisor,
feedback from other members of the team, and from individual volunteers.


Section VI: Project Plan

Please outline goals and results you expect the fellow to achieve and the measures you
will use to evaluate performance. These goals must address the community need stated
above.
     
1. Please describe the proposed project goal you expect the fellow to achieve.
The Fellow will work on finializing the “public” phase of MANNA’s capital/capacity building
campaign.  Over the course of the year, it is anticipated that the campaign will reach its
goal of $3 million in support of MANNA’s increased capacity.  The Fellow will work to refine and build MANNA’s “young friends” program, MANNAfests, to engage more people under 40 with MANNA; serve as part of the event team for Pie in the Sky (October/November); and serve as Assistant Project Manager for A Show of Hands, MANNA’s annual art auction (January – June).  The Fellow will be included as a team member for other events as necessary.  As MANNA builds its capacity to serve more clients, it will need to increase its income as well as the diversity of its support base.  These projects are an integral part of achieving this long-term goal.

Both the events and the capital/capacity building campaign have specific milestones as
well as financial goals.  As part of the initial orientation, MANNA staff will work with the
Fellow to review these goals and set specific targets and deadlines for accomplishments.
