Section III: Community Need
Please submit a one paragraph response for each question.
1. Please state in measurable and quantifiable terms the specific community need that the
Philly Fellow will address, including the number of people in the community directly
affected by the problem.
Over 300,000 college students study in the Philadelphia region. Campus Philly’s Board of
Directors affirmed its interest in strategically increasing students’ involvement in service
to their local communities. From our internal perspective, increased student-community
participation will improve a college student’s experience in the Philadelphia area and
complement our graduate retention strategy.
Students are involved with community service programs addressing a wide array of
community needs, including education, health services, environmental advocacy, low-
income family support, and other important areas of activity.
2. Describe how your agency addresses this need, and how the new capacity created by
this fellow will help alleviate the problem.
Through continued outreach and research, Campus Philly will be able to impact levels of
student involvement. We envision the fellow taking a lead role in current programming and
establishing a permanent community involvement structure at Campus Philly. This
capacity building is necessary, as our current community involvement program will need
support for at least one more year to ensure long-term self-sufficiency. The Philly Fellow
will lead our student-community engagement program by:
• Working with our 20+ partner colleges and universities to identify “gaps” in their
programming and ways to improve the impact of their community involvement
• Working with nonprofit partners to better integrate student interns, work-studys, and
volunteers within their organizations
• Implementing and improving Campus Philly’s current community involvement
programming calendar, including the Kick-Off Involvement Fair; the Student Service
Leaders Conference; MLK Day of Service Outreach; and Alternate Spring Break:
Philadelphia
• Supporting and maintaining the Campus Philly Community Involvement Web Hub,
including a non-profit organization directory and non-profit career development resource
guide.
3. Describe the level of community involvement in the fellow’s project.
The Fellow will not be directly serving communities, but rather sitting at the nexus of
colleges, students, and their local communities. The goal is help students, and their
academic institutions, improve their impact and relationships with the region’s community
and nonprofit organizations. In the process, the Fellow will gain a broad understanding of
the array of needs being addressed by the college community, as well as the strengths
and limitations of college-led service.

in these objectives. Success will also be evaluated upon the project goals listed further in
this application. These goals will be reviewed in consultation with the Executive Director
