Section III: Community Need
Please submit a one paragraph response for each question.
1. Please state in measurable and quantifiable terms the specific community need that the
Philly Fellow will address, including the number of people in the community directly
affected by the problem.
As conversations concerning neighborhood transformation, education reform, and public
open spaces continue to be at the fore of the public agenda, it remains critically important
that all communities have access to the expert advice and resources that will enable them
to participate in these conversations and ultimately have some say in what happens in
their own communities. The Collaborative plays a critical role in providing community-
based nonprofits with such resources.
2. Describe how your agency addresses this need, and how the new capacity created by
this fellow will help alleviate the problem.
Expert design assistance and advice provided to a nonprofit early in the physical
development and construction process greatly enhances the quality of projects such as
affordable housing development, commercial corridor revitalization, or other building
project. The unfortunate reality is that many of the nonprofits that serve as catalysts for
change in the region’s older communities are undercapitalized. Because funding for
preliminary design is extremely scarce many nonprofits bypass this crucial step in the
development process. This is where the Collaborative steps in to leverage professional
services. For nonprofits in the Philadelphia region with big ideas but little up front money,
the Collaborative is the only option for expert, early, pro bono design services.
3. Describe the level of community involvement in the fellow’s project.
The Collaborative’s active volunteer pool of 700 design professionals is a multidisciplinary
blend of architects, landscape architects, engineers, preservationists, contractors, cost
estimators, and interior and graphic designers. In many cases, volunteer design
professionals introduce the facilities planning and development process to an
organization, helping a nonprofit to better understand the scope of a proposed project, the
potential costs, and time frames associated with the design process. This work is all
toward the goal of helping to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations to make
informed decisions about organizational and community development, and revitalization.
